This is my pre-combine full mock draft. I went heavy on run defense while rebuilding quality depth with this draft class. With allot of the Bengals role players up for free agency, we all know you cant keep them all. Time to rebuild the depth and stock pile for the future. I think the Bengals would gain three to four possible future starters with this draft class. Two plug and play starters in Goldman and Perryman. Adding toughness and improving the Bengals run defense week 1. I would love to hear what you think of my first mock draft of the off-season.
Round 1 pick #21: Eddie Goldman / DT / Florida State / 6'3'' 320LBS
Eddie is a fast riser heading into the combine. The buzz of his tape and ability to be a force against the run playing a major role in his rise up the charts. He is not a gifted pass rusher but paired with Geno Atkins, this is less of a concern. Goldman was arguably Florida State's most talented defender in 2014. He is a plug and play prospect who will help improve the 20th ranked Bengals rushing defense. I love Peko and the leadership he brings to the table but I think its time for a youth movement up the gut.
Round 2 pick #53: Denzel Perryman / MLB / Miami / 5'11'' 244LBS
Perryman is a smart defender who reacts to keys decoding plays with natural football instincts. He sheds blocks with pure power and dominates offensive linemen. Hitting gaps quickly using precise angles. He is a rattle your teeth type of bully who can replace Rey Maualuga in the Bengals scheme. I think he can develop into a 3 down MLB but his speed is not his strength. Solid in coverage but will should not be trusted to cover man to man on deeper routes. Denzel is a AFC North type of MLB that will set the tone. The top two picks will improve the suspect run defense that was on display last season.
Round 3 pick #85: Jake Fisher / OT / Oregon / 6'6'' 299LBS
We all know the Bengals struggled with depth last season at the Tackle positions. Jake is a guy who has a chance to improve his stock with a strong combine performance. He is a tough player who takes pride in protecting his QB. In the national championship game vs the Buckeyes, Bucks DE Bosa took a questionable shot on the Heisman winner Mariota. Fisher tried to kill Bosa in the aftermath and made it clear that would not fly when Fisher was on he field. He is a ex TE who has LT skills but projects as a RT at the next level. I doubt he slides to the 3rd but pre-combine his stock was rounds 2-3.
*Round 3 comp for Michael Johnson pick #98: ZaDarius Smith / DE / Kentucky / 6'5'' 270LBS
Pass rusher is a huge need and I chose not to address this until late in the 3rd round. This could be a mistake but that is the way this mock unfolded. Smith has a NFL body and an assortment of pass rush moves. Thought of as more of a run game thumper I see him as a 3 down DE. He is a work in progress that can provide depth and quality snaps when needed. Smith played against top notch competition in the SEC and held his own. ZaDarius has a fantastic motor with a never say die playing style. Not a plug and play starter by any means at this point.
Round 4 pick #120: Ty Montgomery / WR-KR / Stanford / 6'0'' 216LBS
Ty is a rocked up WR who I think of as a faster Anquan Boldin type of talent. The Bengals are search for a slot guy to add to the WR corps that showed a lack of play making ability when AJ Green and Marvin Jones were MIA due to injuries. He is also one of the top kick returners in the draft this year. With a strong build and no fear of contact I think he can help Dalton move the chains. Should also compliment the specials teams replacing the under appreciated Tate.
Round 5 pick #156: Kurtis Drummond / FS / Michigan State / 6'1'' 205LBS
Reggie Nelson ma have had his best season in stripes last year. At this point in the draft the Bengals would be getting a quality back up with play maker ball skills. Used allot at Michigan St covering slot WR. Fluid athlete in covers who will need to work on his tackling. He is not the float around the line of scrimmage type. Top notch instincts in coverage with the ball skills to match is the upside with Kurtis at the next level.
*Round 5 comp for Anthony Collins pick #173: Nick Marshall / CB / Auburn / 6'2'' 205LBS
QB making the move to CD? Interesting talent with some mix and match skills tht make him a intriguing prospect. Collins has not payed CB in three seasons but has the size and speed to be a project for the Bengals secondary coach Vance Joseph. Boom or bust and can play he role of X-Factor in the wild cat. Anthony had a good Senior Bowl and may have done enough to get drafted and not the UDFA invite most think he will receive.
Round 6 pick #192: Derrick Lott / DT / Chattanooga / 6'4'' 299LBS
Lott is a transfer from Georgia who had a hard time earning playing time. He has great pass rushing ability but the level of competition is the concern. Great three-techinique prospect to snag in the 6th round. Derrick can fill in behind Atkins and learn to be a pro from a fellow Bulldog.
Round 7 pick #228: Jermauria Rasco / OLB / LSU / 6'3'' 247LBS
Rasco is a very smart football player. He has above average play recognition instincts and will be a instant special teams producer. Has shorter arms than some would like but has played with his hands on and off the ground. A versatile athlete who could be developed into a starting SAM OLB.
*Compensatory picks based off projections.
