With free agency slowing down and the combine in the book. I give you my second attempt of mocking the BENGALS 2015 draft.
With AJ Hawk and Michael Johnson headed to Cincinnati via free agency. Along with the front office re-signing Clint Boling, Rey Maualuga, Eric Winston, Mike Nugent and Chris Lewis-Harris. The Bengals put themselves in a best player available situation. There will be consideration placed on need based on contracts due to expire after the 2015 season.
Round 1 pick #21: Alvin Dupree - DE - Kentucky - 6'4'' 269lbs
Marvin was at Pro Day and from what I gather he was very impressed. this would help sure up the pass rush and LB corps. Use Dupree like the Broncos use Von Miller and this should be a fantastic fit for the Bengals.
Round 2 pick #53: Jordan Phillips - DT - Oklahoma - 6'5'' 329lbs
Jordan has slipped down some value charts and with such a deep class for the D-Line I could see him slip. Phillips is a monster of a man and a true nosetackle. Would be an upgrade against fan favorite Peko. It hurts me to replace Peko here!
Round 3 pick #85: Phillip Dorsett - WR - Miami (Fla.) - 5'10'' 185lbs
Speed and the slot would be addressed with this pick. Dorsett is a bit raw in his route running and some think he has suspect hands. I think he has big play X-factor written all over him. Would be a great help to Dalton and the offense to replace what was lost when baby hawk left.
*Round 3 pick #98 (comp for MJ): Donovan Smith - OT - Penn State - 6'6'' 338lbs
Huge man with heavy hands who can come in and provide a future for the O-Line. He can play inside or RT. I like the vet Winston but this team needs a youth injection. A bit of a project but is a great run blocker and suited for the AFC North trenches.
Round 4 pick #120: Kurtis Drummond FS 6 Michigan State rSr 6-1 208
Kurtis is a ball hawk who can drop down and cover slot WR. He is a suspect tackler but I trust Vance Joseph to fix that issue. Would provide a possible replacement for Reggie Nelson who is coming off a fantastic season.
Round 5 pick #156: Ty Montgomery WR 21 Stanford Sr 6-0 221
I cant get away from selecting Ty Montgomery. I think he is going to be an outstanding late round selection. Great kick returner who can replace Tate and has some understated hands to go along with some decent route running ability. Ty would be another option to play the slot WR spot and provide more upside and depth the the WR unit that was decimated by injuries last year.
*Round 5 pick #173 (comp fo AC): Clayton Geathers SS 6 UCF rSr 6-2 218
Clayton is a interesting prospect who is going to need to develop. You will not find many plug and play types in the later rounds. This is another toy for Vance Joseph to mold into a productive professional player. Should be a special teams asset day 1 but will need to improve other aspects to get the call over Williams who is currently the SS backup.
Round 6 pick #192: Andrew Donnal OT 17 Iowa rSr 6-6 313
Andrew is a technically sound O=-Line prospect like most Iowa studs. Not a dancing bear type and not the strongest but he knows how to play the game. Could be a nice fit for the Bengals system and provide more youth the this unit. Development will be key and he will have to get stronger to make an impact.
Round 7 pick #228: Curtis Grant ILB 19 Ohio State Sr 6-3 240
Curtis is a solid player who is ranked lower than I expected. I think he is a three down ILB who can cover and play the run. He does everything well but not one thing fantastic. Coming from a championship program and being one of the leaders shows he is a the type of player the Benglas have valued lately.
Let me know what you think Bengals fans!
