The Bengals took their first real steps into the Jay Gruden era last night by choosing AJ Green with the 4th overall pick. The impressive playmaking WR out of Georgia is now the future of our passing game. With a so called “franchise quarterback” in Gabbert still on the board the Bengals were left with a decision to make. I was afraid that Mike Brown and company would feel pressured into picking Gabbert to replace Palmer. They went with the number one offensive guy on their board by a landslide according to new OC Jay Gruden. This was good news because I want the Bengals to trust their draft board. They did not get scared and make a knee jerk decision and draft Gabbert. I have all ready read the negative responses to the pick like who is going to throw the ball to him and AJ looked depressed when the pick was announced. It’s all gibberish! AJ Green was born to play WR and he will prove it the day he steps on the field.
With the excitement I see in the coaches eyes I think they have a pretty good plan to deal with the QB situation. If Carson is not tempted by the receiving core I know a veteran FA would be. Point is I want a QB but I do not want the Bengals to reach for a guy and miss out on a pro bowl talent.
This team is now sitting pretty with many possible options in the second round. The need for a Safety, OL, OLB, RB, CB and QB are all possibilities with the 35th pick. With Mallett and Dalton sitting there I have to believe one of these two will be the choice. Unless the AJ Green pick impressed Palmer so much that he has changed his mind. If the Bengals are not sold on either young QB then the options are limitless. There are some really damn good football players still on the board that could come in and make a difference. The need to improve the defense and offensive line is a must.
