Heading into the season the Bengals front office stepped up and addressed
the interior O-Line issues by signing run blocking stud Travelle Wharton and
drafting Kevin Zeitler in the 1st round. Before this new improved group of
players could even start to build chemistry, the Bengals lost their newly acquired
starting left guard Wharton for the season. A few weeks later center Kyle Cook
went down and was placed on the injured reserve list. Cook will have a chance
to return later this season if his right ankle heals. It remains a mystery if
he will be able to make it back.
Marvin Lewis and Paul Alexander called upon on the second year right guard out of Georgia Clint Boling to take over for Travelle at left guard. Clint is a tough kid who got some playing time last year filling in for the suspended Bobbie Williams. The Bengals were forced to grab a serviceable center off of the street due to Cook being the only true center on the Bengals Roster. After making some calls the front office signed a 10 year NFL vet working who was working as an insurance salesmen at the time in Jeff Faine to plug the hole left by Cook at center.
Needless to say the fans including myself were freaking out. Would we be able to run the ball and would Andy Dalton even survive the MNF game against the violent Ravens. Panic set in and the fear of the unknown took over. My concern on the play of the O-Line is a total after thought and that is saying something. I know these guys are pros but to sign a man off the street and ask a second year player to switch positions did not sound promising. Lets not forget the play of our tackles, Andre Smith and Whitworth have earned the right to be called bookend tackles. Ad the young strong as an ox rookie starter Zeitler and the future is once again bright.
Heading into week 5 the Bengals are sitting at 3-1 tied with the Ravens for 1st place in the AFC North. A heavy dose of props goes out to Paul Alexander, Boling and Faine! Great job so far but still plenty of time to improve! WHO DEY!
